Computers--inside and out

Pippin Publishing has created a new approach to computer literacy in the form of COMPUTERS: INSIDE & OUT by Lauckner, Lintner, & Vile. Pippin's philosophy emphasizes foundations & fundamentals of computers & computer science. Part I begins with an answer to the question: What is Information? The five kinds of information (i.e. numbers, symbols, pictures, sound, & instructions) are discussed along with where the computer keeps them (e.g. RAM, ROM, floppy disks, CD ROM). Understanding how a computer works is approached through the ROBOT & Pencil & Paper computers. Then how to communicate with the computer through high level languages is addressed. Part II of the book discusses the six major applications used in every field of human endeavor (i.e. visual communication, audio communication, information systems, education & training, artificial intelligence, & simulation). Each of these application areas is investigated through many examples (e.g. false coloring satellite images, voice prints, U. S. Census, CPR training, expert systems, world simulation, & many others). The need to learn the computer tools of word processing, spreadsheets, & data base systems is addressed through separate set of student manuals.
